Uzbek World Cup referees appointed for India's Brazil, Uruguay friendlies
A quartet of Uzbek officials with FIFA World Cup 2026 experience will oversee India's high-profile friendlies against Brazil and Uruguay in Kolkata.

India will play Brazil on October 3 and Uruguay on October 6 in Kolkata. The All India Football Federation has appointed a four-referee team from Uzbekistan, led by Ilgiz Tantashev, to officiate both marquee friendlies.
Ilgiz Tantashev will be the match referee for the India-Brazil friendly at Salt Lake Stadium. His Uzbek colleagues are Rustam Lutfulin, Andrey Tsapenko, and Timur Gaynullin. The federation enlisted the officials specifically for these high-profile matches.
Uzbek referee team's World Cup and international experience
Three of the four Uzbek officials have officiated at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Ilgiz Tantashev refereed a group-stage match between France and Paraguay at the recent tournament. Andrey Tsapenko and Timur Gaynullin also served as officials at the World Cup.
For the match against Brazil, Rustam Lutfulin will serve as fourth official. Tsapenko and Gaynullin will be the assistant referees. A senior AIFF official stated that Uzbekistan was asked to send referees because of their World Cup experience and their ability to handle teams of the caliber of Brazil and Uruguay.
Roles reversed for India-Uruguay friendly three days later
The officials will swap roles for the second friendly. For the India-Uruguay match on October 6, Rustam Lutfulin will step up as the match referee. Ilgiz Tantashev will then serve as the fourth official. Andrey Tsapenko and Timur Gaynullin will continue as assistant referees for both fixtures.
Brazil team news and India coach's perspective
Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has not yet decided his starting eleven. He sees the match as an opportunity more than a test, emphasizing the chance to give new players game time. Ancelotti acknowledged India's attacking threat and singled out Ryan Williams as a major threat who can break through Brazil's defence.
India's coach, Khalid Jamil, noted that mistakes can cost his team the match against Brazil. He acknowledged the pressure of facing the South American giants. Jamil prefers to keep things simple and has urged his players to play their role and execute their responsibilities.
Additional referee credentials and match context
Ilgiz Tantashev brings a wealth of continental and global experience beyond the World Cup. He has officiated at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, two AFC Asian Cups, and three AFC U-23 Asian Cups. His club competition resume includes the AFC Champions League Elite and six editions of the AFC Cup.
Arunava Bhattacharya of India has been appointed as the match commissioner for the fixtures. He has overseen over 50 international matches as an AFC match commissioner since 2019 and as a FIFA match commissioner since 2023. The matches will be played in Kolkata, with the Brazil friendly on October 3 and the Uruguay friendly on October 6.
