The Game: Comoros and Senegal meet for the first time ever in a 2026 international friendly at Marseille's Stade Velodrome

Comoros face Senegal in a 2026 international friendly this Sunday afternoon, 04/10/2026, at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille. This historic first-ever meeting between the two nations offers a crucial test for both teams as they assess squad depth and tactical cohesion.

Senegal’s recent form and leadership

Senegal are now under the management of Patrick Vieira, who took charge after leaving Genoa in November 2025. His tenure has produced mixed results so far in 2026. Vieira's first match ended in a 1-1 draw with Mozambique, but his side then recorded a 1-0 victory over Ethiopia last Tuesday, earning four points from two competitive fixtures. The team began the year with two friendly wins but have now gone two matches without a victory.

A key figure in their attack is 25-year-old Aston Villa striker Nicolas Jackson. He has two goal contributions in his last two matches for the national side. Patrick Vieira is unlikely to underestimate this test. Senegal's greater depth and individual quality make them favourites, with the main question being whether they can find their attacking fluency.

Comoros’ recent trajectory and key players

Hubert Velud, the 57-year-old head coach of Comoros, oversees a team seeking consistency. His side lost their opening AFCON qualifier 3-1 away to Cameroon but responded with a 1-0 home win against Namibia. That victory was their first competitive win in ten months, ending a poor run of just two wins in 11 matches. Their previous competitive success was a penalty-shootout triumph over Yemen in the Arab Cup in November 2025.

Scoring has been a persistent issue. Comoros had five consecutive matches without a goal before their recent scoring run and have managed only one goal in each of their past three games. The decisive goal against Namibia came from 32-year-old right-back Benjaloud Youssouf, who has been involved in both Comoros goals during this international window. Another key contributor is 27-year-old Zaydou Youssouf, who provided an important assist in their previous outing.

Velud, who previously managed Togo, Sudan, and Burkina Faso, took over from Stefano Cusin after his three-year spell. The team has shown it can spring surprises, having won in Tunisia during the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign despite being given just a 6.7% chance of victory before kick-off.

Goalkeeping and squad dynamics

In goal, Senegal may turn to Yehvann Diouf, who has become first-choice since Edouard Mendy's international retirement, or Mory Diaw. For Comoros, Yannick Pandor is expected to retain his place after a strong performance in the clean sheet against Namibia.

The historic fixture will conclude on Sunday afternoon, 04/10/2026, at Stade Velodrome in Marseille.
