India's football team conceded 11 goals across three matches in the September-October international window, suffering heavy defeats to Brazil and Uruguay. The team lost 4-0 to Brazil and 6-1 to Uruguay at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium, having conceded 10 goals in the two matches prior to the Uruguay fixture.

Anirudh Thapa scored India's only goal across those two heavy losses. The team had opened the window with a more positive 1-1 draw against Panama.

Coach Khalid Jamil's self-criticism and tactical reflections

Head coach Khalid Jamil took full responsibility for the team's performance. He admitted his tactical plan was inadequate and cited a collective lack of concentration as a primary issue.

Jamil argued that playing against high-quality opposition helps understand the level required to compete. He noted that India's performance typically dropped after the first 30 minutes of matches, suggesting fitness and concentration may be issues. He observed more problems arising around the 60th or 70th minute in games.

Jamil stated he wants to play more matches at this level and called for more camps to improve team preparation. He said selection would remain competitive and indicated changes may be made for the upcoming national team camp based on Indian Super League performances. He told his players the results were a collective mistake and urged them to focus on their club duties.

He would not blame his players for the results. Jamil acknowledged a specific tactical choice contributed to the defensive problems. We didn’t make the defense strong, because from the start we thought that we want to go attacking because we are playing home ground and it is a friendly, he explained.

Context of the Uruguay match and external factors

India showed early promise against Uruguay, scoring a goal and trailing just 2-1 at halftime. The match was then significantly affected by a lightning delay. The game was interrupted by rain and lightning, causing a 34-minute stoppage.

Khalid Jamil stated the lightning break affected both teams equally. India subsequently conceded four goals in the second half, collapsing to a 6-1 defeat.

Upcoming fixtures and future outlook

With the Indian Super League set to begin soon, the national team's focus shifts to rectifying mistakes ahead of its next assignment. India has a historic tour of New Zealand scheduled for November.

This will be India's first-ever visit to New Zealand. Both matches fall within the FIFA international window.

Khalid Jamil stressed the need for improved focus moving forward. Preparation should be good, before the game and during the game also, he said. Concentration should be good; no distraction should be there. India will face New Zealand in Auckland on November 12 and Christchurch on November 15 as part of their first-ever tour to the country.
