Seventeen-year-old Kumkum Mohod won India's first Asian Games individual recurve archery gold in Japan on Saturday, October 3. Her victory over South Korea's Oh Yejin secured a crucial individual quota place for India at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Mohod also claimed a mixed team silver, capping an extraordinary Games with three medals and becoming the first Indian woman to win an individual recurve medal at the continental event.

Medal haul and knockout victories

Kumkum Mohod's gold was the centerpiece of a three-medal haul at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya. She won team gold in the recurve event on October 2 with teammates Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma. She added a mixed pair silver with Dhiraj Bommadevara. Her path to the individual title required a series of dramatic knockout victories.

She first defeated reigning world champion Kang Chaeyoung of South Korea 6-4 in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal, she overcame former world number one and world championships silver medallist Jingyi Zhu of China 6-2, taking the opening set 28-27. The final against Oh Yejin was a tense affair. Mohod overcame a poor start, including scoring an 8 in the opening set, before rallying with three 10s in the third set. The match went to a shoot-off tied at 5-5. Needing a 9 or better to win, Mohod delivered a perfect 10. The detailed set scores from the final were:

"I held my nerve against South Korea’s Oh Yejin and won on a single arrow," Mohod said. Her victory marked India's fifth archery gold of the Games.

Olympic qualification milestone

By reaching the semifinals, Kumkum Mohod secured one of two available individual recurve quota places for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The quota belongs to the nation, not the athlete, guaranteeing India a spot in the event. This achievement adds a significant Olympic pathway to her historic Asian Games gold. Before Mohod, Tarundeep Rai was the only other Indian to win an individual recurve medal at the Asian Games, taking silver back in 2010.

A rising star's profile

Born on March 10, 2009, in Maharashtra, Kumkum Mohod made her major international debut at the 2025 Asia Cup in Bangkok. She rapidly ascended, winning a World Cup team gold in Shanghai in May by beating China in the final. She also took a mixed team gold in Antalya, defeating South Korea. Her personal best score is 671, and her highest world ranking is 50. Her victory in Japan was accompanied by the Indian national anthem, a fitting tribute to a breakthrough performance. Her victory capped an extraordinary Games where she signed off with three medals.
