India U20 host Uzbekistan in AFC qualifier

India's U20 men's football team faces hosts Uzbekistan in a key AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 qualifier on Thursday, September 3, 2026. The match kicks off at 7:30 PM IST at Tashkent's Do'stlik Stadium.

India, known as the Blue Colts, began their qualifying campaign with a 1-0 victory over Syria on Monday. Shami Singamayum scored the decisive goal in the 86th minute. Uzbekistan also started strongly, defeating Bangladesh 2-0 to top Group B on goal difference. Only the group winners and the seven best runners-up from eight groups will advance to the final tournament. Due to Group A containing only three teams, the results against the bottom-placed team in each group will not be considered when comparing the runners-up, adding further importance to the contests between the top three sides.

Qualification scenarios for Group B

A win for India against Uzbekistan could secure their qualification on Thursday. This outcome, combined with Bangladesh failing to beat Syria in the group's other fixture, would guarantee India top spot and a place at the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027. Head coach Mahesh Gawali, however, is focused solely on the immediate challenge.

He said the first match was important, and it was good to start with a win. He noted the first half was tough, but the team defended well, had some chances, and utilised them to score the winning goal.

The team has trained quickly since the Syria match. Following that match, the squad returned to training on Tuesday evening, with the players who started against Syria undergoing a lighter recovery session, while the rest of the squad completed a full training session. India then held their official match-eve training session on Wednesday evening, with both sessions scheduled around the same time as Thursday's kick-off to allow the team to continue acclimatising to the evening conditions in Tashkent. Monday's match against Syria was in much warmer temperatures at four in the afternoon.

Gawali assesses the Uzbek threat

Coach Gawali acknowledged the quality of the opposition. Uzbekistan impressed in their opening match, and the Indian side is preparing for a stern test.

He said Uzbekistan are a very good team, describing them as very sharp and clever. He added that their transitions, both in attack and defence, are very sharp and that they have a lot of quality in the team.

The fixture also presents India with a chance to overturn a poor historical record against Uzbekistan at this age level. The two nations have met four times previously in competitive U20 fixtures, with India losing on every occasion.

Building on the Syria performance

Despite the historical challenge, India will draw confidence from their disciplined display against Syria. The team remained compact under pressure, with goalkeeper Suraj Singh Aheibam making key saves before Shami's late winner.

Gawali stressed that improvement is a constant goal, even after a positive result. He stated the team has to improve in every game, and that against Syria, they defended well and showed good character, adding that the mentality is the same.

The match against Uzbekistan is the second of three Group B fixtures for India, with a final game against Bangladesh to follow. The team's immediate focus is on executing their plan against the group hosts in Tashkent.
