The Indian senior men's football team will face Brazil for the first time in a historic friendly on October 3, 2026, at Kolkata's Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan. This match against the five-time World Cup champions revives memories of a previous encounter between the nations' youth teams a decade earlier.
In October 2016, India's under-17 men's team, known as the Blue Colts, faced their Brazilian counterparts in the group stage of the BRICS U-17 Football Cup in Goa. The tournament, which ran from October 5 to 15, featured teams from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Brazil won the inaugural event, defeating South Africa in the final. The competition also served as preparation for India's hosting of the FIFA U-17 World Cup the following year.
A Tough Tournament Start
India entered its final group match against Brazil with its hopes already extinguished. The Blue Colts had suffered three consecutive losses to Russia, South Africa, and China. They had failed to score a single goal in those matches. The team's spirit was low ahead of facing the tournament favorites.
The Match Against Brazil
Brazil's Brenner Souza da Silva, known simply as Brenner, crushed any remaining Indian optimism almost immediately. He scored with a left-footed strike in the second minute, putting the ball past Indian goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz. Despite the early setback and constant Brazilian pressure, the Indian team showed resilience.
In the 19th minute, Komal Thatal made history. He equalized the match with a curled shot from the edge of the penalty box. Thatal's goal was a landmark moment, marking India's first and only goal of the entire tournament.
The joy was short-lived. India could not convert further chances and conceded two more goals, in the 30th and 82nd minutes. The final goal of the group stage was scored by Vinicius Junior, who would later become a Brazilian international and finished as the tournament's top scorer. The match ended 3-1 to Brazil.
Aftermath and Assessment
Despite the loss, then-Brazil coach Carlos Amadeu deemed India's defensive abilities impressive. India finished the tournament with four consecutive losses and just one goal scored. The performance foreshadowed India's campaign at the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup. Under coach Nicolai Adam, the team scored only once in three group stage matches and finished last in its group with zero points.
The senior team now prepares for its own historic test. The Blue Tigers will be led by head coach Khalid Jamil when they meet Brazil in Kolkata in 2026, a decade after their youth counterparts managed to find the net against the South American giants.
