AFC U20 Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers launch with new two-tier format
The AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 Qualifiers begin on 31 August 2026, offering 15 berths for next year’s finals. Thirty-one teams compete in the Qualification Phase and eleven in the Development Phase under a revamped format.
The AFC announced that the journey to the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027™ starts on August 31 (Monday), 2026 with the first round of matches in the centralised Qualifiers. This edition marks the 23rd time the qualification pathway has been used since its introduction in 1980 and introduces a two-tier format for the first time. Fifteen berths at next year’s Finals are up for grabs, with hosts China PR joining the qualifiers’ successful teams.
Qualification Phase structure
Thirty-one teams are divided into eight groups, where all group winners and the seven best second-placed teams advance to join China PR at the 43rd edition of the tournament. The six lowest-ranked fourth-placed teams are relegated to the Development Phase of the next Qualifiers. Development Phase pathway
Eleven teams contest the Development Phase, split into three groups. The first and second-placed teams in each group earn promotion to the Qualification Phase of the next Qualifiers. Group I features Mongolia hosting the Northern Mariana Islands, with Guam also playing due to Nepal’s non-participation. Group J sees Chinese Taipei face Macau, China, followed by Singapore versus Bhutan. Group K includes Myanmar hosting Sri Lanka, while the Maldives and Brunei Darussalam meet later in the day.
Notable contenders and debut hopes
Holders Australia are aiming to retain their crown, needing to navigate their 10th Qualifiers to return for a 10th Finals appearance. Thirteen other former champions will also be chasing another title. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Palestine and Turkmenistan are hoping to make their debut in the Finals tournament.
